Research on the Bilingual Renditions of Taiwanese Night Market Snack Names

並列摘要

This research examines the Chinese-English bilingual renditions of Taiwanese night market snack names with data collected from books, journals, and websites in Taiwan. Reviewing some translation theories and research on the translation of Chinese dish names, four types of translation methods are introduced in this paper, namely, Literal Translation, Paraphrasing, Transliteration, and Foreign Terms. Based on these four methods, application principles and applicable models are suggested. Regarding data analysis, in addition to the four types mentioned above, this research further suggests another classification for questionable translations, namely Mistranslation, with its classifying principles illustrated. According to the principles and models, the recommended translations for some snack names are presented along with the data. Moreover, the four methods can be applied for translating new dish names. The advised translations as well as mistranslations are marked for reference for the general public.
