The Benefits of Early Cochlear Implantation and Tone Acquisition

Specialists working in the field of the language development of hearing-impaired children underline the importance of early cochlear implantation. This study probed tone acquisition in a hearing-impaired child with early implantation, and compared him with his hearing-normal fraternal twin sister. They were observed at home, once every 2 weeks, from the age of 4 months to 34 months. The speech data was recorded with Sony DAT recorders and consisted mainly of natural daily interactions with each other or their mother. This current study reports the observation from 18 to 24 months. The results indicated that the hearing-impaired child produced the high falling tone with the most precision, and correctly produced the high level tone and the high falling tone more frequently than the other tones. Although the hearingimpaired child did not perform as well as his hearing-normal twin sister at the same age, if his hearing age was taken into account, his tone development was age appropriate. Moreover, the hearing-impaired child also showed improvement in the difference between maximum and minimum of fundamental frequencies.
