The Weiguan-Jinlong Building collapsed in the 0206 Meinong earthquake in 2016. After two years, the 0206 Hualien earthquake caused the inclination of Yunmen-Cueidi Building. To understand why the Weiguan-Jinlong Building and the Yunmen-Cueidi Building collapsed, the mechanism which led to their destruction will be discussed in this paper in light of the damaged condition of the two buildings. The discussion is divided into three parts, the first part is the study of the earthquake's properties based on the measurement data from the seismic station nearby. The second part is the comparison of the torsional eccentricity caused by the seismic forces between the former and later arrangement of the walls. The final part is the preliminary assessment of the damage mechanism of the two buildings. Based on the result of the sequential analysis of the simulation model and the supporting evidence provided by the site investigation photoes, we conclude the main reason underlying the damage mechanisms of the Weiguan-Jinlong Building and the Yunmen-Cueidi Building are highly correlated with the defects observable in the structural system, the weak levels within the building, and the torsional eccentricity caused by the earthquake force.
