For the particular conditions of weather, geography, and land use, watershed development is an unavoidable tendency for contemporary Taiwan. Several engineering measures are applied in the field to keep the same or lower peak flow compared to that of the watershed before development under specific design frequency rainfall. For the last decade, several theses about flood-detention dam, modified from traditional check dam with a narrow and deep opening in the center, were completed under the guiding of second author. This paper tries to conclude the characteristics of this particular flood-detention dam from those experimental studies. Comparisons with detention basin, which is used for flood control at urban area in U. S., are also made to show the essential differences between these two methods. Finally, the possible future researches are discussed in the paper.
