The Development and Treatment of Oral Motor Dysfunction for Developmentally Disabled Children

One of the earliest problems faced by the developmentally disabled children is the feeding problem, which results from poor development of oral-motor control. This paper has, reviewed the related literature and concluds that such oral-motor deficits are frequently linked with sensory and motor dysfunction. Thus, the neuromuscular and sensorimotor approaches are more emphasized rather than traditional surgical or behavioral approach. This review trys to report the evaluation and treatment of severe feeding dysfunction for the health of the developmental disabilities through such approaches, which are based on the theories of Mar-garet Rood, Shereen Farber and Karl & Berta Bobath.
