「神道設教」與海外華人地域社會的跨界與整合：馬來西亞檳城的實例

摘要

馬來西亞檳城是英屬東印度公司於1786年所開闢的自由貿易據點，也是華人最早被英殖民當局鼓勵移民的城市；多元族群分工、分治，是該城市所賴以發展的基礎，神權社會則是多元族群共存共榮的載體。本文循著「神道設教」的思考進路，以研究者2006至2008年間在檳城的田野經驗，佐證石碑、文物，回溯檳城華人社會的聚合與離散過程，呈現神道設教下變動不居的海外華人地域社會。

Penang, a free port opened by the East India Company, 1786; also the first city encouraged by British Colonial Government of Chinese immigration. The multiethnic society of Penang is the founder stone of her development. And the ”Theocratic” society is the reason maintaining the flourishing of Penang. This article is based on the researcher '06-'08's fieldwork in Penang. Combining field study, analysis of tablet recording and historical relics, researcher intends to date back the dynamism of Chinese society in Penang, to draw an outline of overseas Chinese under the ”Guidance by the way of the Gods.”
