Aging frequently has a deleterious effect on balance in the elderly, leading to falls, injuries and reduced quality of life. Whether simple Qigong can improve physical and mental health should be determined. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of dharma drum eight-form moving meditation on the balance and quality of life of the elderly. A quasi-experimental research design is used. The research subjects were a community that included 37 elderly persons (over the age of 60), who three times a week received a 30 minute-long dharma drum eight-form moving meditation intervention for a total of 12 weeks. A control group of 31 subjects received no intervention. The two groups took balance (single leg stance with eyes opened and closed, functional reach, 30s chair sit to stand, and timed up and go) and quality of life (SF-36 scale) tests before and after the 12 weeks of the study. SPSS version 18.0 was used for statistical analysis. The results thus obtained revealed that the experimental group enjoyed significant improvements (p <0.05) in the test that involved single leg stance with eyes closed, the timed up and go test and general health (on the SF-36 scale). The results suggest that the dharma drum eight-form moving meditation can be used to improve balance, prevent falling and improve the quality of life of the elderly.
