Seven diseased chicks from a broiler flock of 500 Taiwanese native chicks raised in a small experimental farm, was submitted for diagnosis to the diagnostic laboratory of National Chung Hsing University in 1996. The diseased chicks, two days-old, showed clinical manifestation of deep depression, poor feathering, emaciation, and sleepy. Additionally, they huddled under the heat source, and died thereafter with whitish chalk droppings on the vents. Based on the pathological and microbiological examinations, the died chicks at 3 day-old was diagnosed as Paratyphoid infection of Salmonella paratyphi A. By the results of drug sensitive tests, the condition of chicken flock was improved after administrating the drug of Flumequine via drinking water for 5 days, in the concentration of 0.03%. Salmonella paratyphi infection is a zoonotic disease, and can not be ignored in the public health.
