The purpose of this study was, through the investigation from the carpenters and the sawmills, to understand the traditional technology for timber construction and to understand the practical use of wood from the cited literatures and by visiting the work-yard. Most of the woods used for the temples and wealthy buildings, which came from the mainland China, were light in weight, straight of bole, and easy to work, while the woods used for domestic buildings were local hardwoods. In the timber construction of Ristorical Buildings, the master carpenters would set the tree-base end at the bottom of the column, and so as the rafter, and as for the purlin of the central bay, the tree-base end was laid leftward, while for the beam the tree-base end toward the door.
