Museums today serve multiple roles and positions in society. In addition to their traditional functions of research, collection, exhibition, and education, they also function as open spaces for dialogue. Exhibitions remain to be a crucial medium for communication with the audience. Moreover, in museums, how to utilize evolving multimedia technology to respond to the display and communication needs of exhibitions is also a significant issue. This paper takes the case of the multimedia design planning following the renewal of the permanent exhibition "Our Land, Our People: The Story of Taiwan" at the National Museum of Taiwan History in 2021 as a practical exploration. The intention is to analyze the timing, contexts, types, and potential challenges of applying multimedia in exhibitions. Furthermore, it discusses the unique position of multimedia in history-based museums during conceptual exhibitions and the various possibilities for museum and exhibition development that arise within the integration of the virtual and the real.
