The Effects of Vibration on Self-Stimulatory Behaviors in Developmentally Disabled Clients

The purpose of this paper is to investigate (1) whether vibratory stimuli will affect self-stimulatory behavior (SSB), (2) different frequencies of vibration might have different effects on SSB. The developmentally disabled adults 3 females, 7 males, from two different centers participated in this study. Every one received two frequencies of vibratory stimuli in each treatment session, then SSB was recorded before and after applying the stimuli. There were 12 sessions for each subject (twice a week for 6 weeks). After the analysis. the results showed that vibration can change SSB. A significant difference was found between baseline and low frequency in vocalization and hand playing. However, there was no significant difference in other SSBs. This might because our recording procedures emphasized collecting the frequency instead of the quality of SSB, the change in intensity and amplitude of SSB could not be reflected in the results. The authors suggested future studies should emphasize the multiple measurement of SSB, and the effects of various ranges of vibratory stimulation on different types of SSB. This can be accomplished by taking a large sample size, increasing the number of treatment sessions and including follow-up procedures in the method.
