The new aromatic rice variety Taikeng No.4 developed and released in 1990 by Hualien DAIS, was derived by pedigree selection from a cross made between CNSP 702361 and Chianung Yu 258 in first crop of 1983. The new variety is a medium-late in maturity (120∼146 days in first crop and 102∼126 in second crop) with optimum plant height (90cm), resistant to lodging and rice blast (Pyricularia oryza). Grain yield averaged 5,946kg/ha in first crop and 4,211kg/ha in second crop during 1988-1989 tests, the stability and yield potential was similar to the leading variety Tainung No.67. The sensorial evaluation on aroma and eating quality of cooked rice showed better than recommended good quality rice variety Taichung No.189. This variety is adaptable to Hualien, Taoyuan, Chiayi and Pingtung counties, and it is expected to be expanded rapidly in those areas.
