During the Ch'ing Dynasty, important changes in printing occurred in Taiwan society. By using traditional block printing techniques, publications boomed in many aspects of society, such as in the fields of official examinations, political pamphelets, educational publications, as well as religious teachings. However, only a few of the published works survived due to such natural disasters as floods, typhoons and earthquakes. Calamities caused by human beings such as wars and arsons also did much damage to the printed works. In addition, the poor quality of printing material was one of the causes that affect the life of publications as well. Poring over the government documents such as local history, private book collections, and other sources, the author hopes to unearth new facts of publication in Ch'ing Taiwan, so as to fill out the missing chapter in the development of printing in the Ch'ing Dynasty.
