The phenomenon of female inmates' homosexuality can be found in the Western research literature, but its indigenous phenomenon is still not learned in Taiwan. In order for the researcher to understand the homosexual roles and the multi-motivation of the female inmates, 10 female inmates in a prison in northern Taiwan were invited to participate in an in-depth, semi-structured interview. Following transcription of the interviews, the data were then read and analyzed with narrative analysis. Throughout the course of this study, the women discussed several different motivations, interaction with their partners and they considered possible impetuses for participation in homosexual relationships. Intimate sexual relationships are formed primarily on the basis of emotional commitment, game playing, and economic manipulation. On the basis of their comments, five categories of motivations merged from the data: economic motivation, sincere relationship, having their pastime, curiosity and sexual identity. Their interaction of routine activities were including sending messages, providing food or their needing, attending some activities, and getting together smoking or showering. Therefore, most of the women participated in institutional homosexuality was a temporary substitute for heterosexual relationships. Despite the prohibition in the prison, the authority cannot stop homosexuality from happening. A correctional institute which detains inmates of the same sex provides a friendly environment for homosexuality between inmates. Whatever their motivation or attitude may be, homosexuality will continue to exist as long as there are needs for it.
