Background aad purpose: To improve the rooming-in implementation and breastfeeding rate. Methods: Semi-structured questionnaires were used to identify the main factors affecting rooming-in implementation in the postpartum ward by postpartum women. Based on the investigation, using a quality control tool, a project of rooming- in practice for postpartum women was developed to remove the main barriers. Results: Three main problems affecting implementation of rooming-in were identified, firstly, postpartum women and their family refused to practice rooming-in, secondly, staff lacked knowledge and skills to satisfy the postpartum women, and thirdly the maternity ward was not suitable for rooming-in measures. Using the results of the survey a rooming-in promotion program was developed. The program was implemented from January to December 2001 and review of the outcomes showed that four to five women a month carried out rooming-in for 24 hours (2.02%) and the percentage of rooming-in for four hours increased to approximately 78.55%. In addition, the criteria for a ‘baby-friendly hospital were uncovered through the implementation of the program. Couclusioa: It was found that the project successfully promoted rooming-in to postpartum women in the hospital. Furthermore, women rooming-in for 24 hours were significantly more successful in breastfeeding than women who did not participate in rooming-in. Results also indicate that a nursing care plan combined mother-infant care is important in execution of high quality rooming-in care. The outcome also found that encouraging mother and infant bed-sharing had an impact on the success of the rooming-in promotion program.
