Lack of regular physicial activity or other hospital-acquired complications often cause functional decline, which in turn could further increase mortality and length of hospital stay in hospitalized elderly patients. A number of recent studies suggest that providing exercise program to hospitalized elderly patients help prevent functional decline during hospitalization. The purpose of this article is to review relevant studies focusing on exercise program and to set up an exercise protocol for prevention of functional decline among hospitalized elderly patients. The protocol starts with risk assessment. Physical function of elderly patients was then assessed. The personalized exercise prescription was given accordingly. Nurses play a crucial role in the process due to frequent one-to-one interactions with the hospitalized elderly patients. This proposed protocol may be helpful in providing optimal care for the hospitalized elderly patients.
