Two basic kinds of reading—intensive reading and extensive reading—are integrated in our English classes in order to enhance the effectiveness of English learning. Intensive reading focuses on the study of vocabulary, phrases, and grammar patterns. Usually a textbook is used for intensive reading. On the other hand, extensive reading emphasizes on general understanding and the pleasure of reading, and graded readers are useful materials for extensive reading. In this article, extensive reading means that teachers use the same graded reader to guide the whole class to read. Students in our college are more familiar with the intensive reading methods of studying English. While reading, they read slowly and carefully. When students apply intensive reading methods to reading the graded readers, they would be frustrated and would not be able to enjoy reading at all. It is suggested that teachers show students appropriate extensive reading methods to meet the purposes of extensive reading. In this way, students may have a positive attitude toward graded readers. As a result, they would be highly motivated and would enjoy reading extensively.
