One of the main trends in museum operations during the past few years has been the intregration of the museum into the community around it. Museums are generally viewed as educational institutions, and development of a museum is often closely tied to development of cultural education in its neighborhood. Thus it is essential to improve the interaction between museums and their communicites. Development of the museum can be hendered by liited Landing and personnel, however, and the museum needs to seek out resources around it that can used to help it develop as quickly and ideally as possible. The community in turn will thn profit from the services the museum will be able to provide in building a sense of identity and a culture in the community. One of the highest priorities for a museum is to follow this trend toward 'localization' and adjust its own pace in everything including collections, research, education and entertainment with the goal of more local orientation in mind. This mind entail developing a collection system for local culture, research aimed at more regional topics, and exhibitions geared more closely to local tastes. Education activities should be designed to draw more people from the surround areas to participate. All of these efforts should be aimed at providing social education, scientific knowledge and cultural improvement and preservation of local literature as well as academic research and entertainment that will appeal to people who live near the museum. The local public should be encouraged to participate more in museum activities in order to build a greater sense of community in the neighborhood. And once more, it is essential for the museum to build strong links to the communitiy resource around it, encouraging the local population to perform mote volunteer work on behalf of the museum. The people of the area should also be encouraged to contribute materials and equipment for use in the museum's collections and displays. Locals may also be able to assist in work such as organization of collected materials. The enlistment of local resources should help to make the museum more effective while contributing to the development of local culture and improving interaction between museum and community. The NSTM has always worked to be a 'good neighbor' in the community. The museum has done well in its five key roles for people living nearby, serving as a preserver of literature and art, an improver of culture, an academic researcher, a social educator/scientific BEI-KEZHE, and an entertainment provider. In other areas such as the collection of local literature, provision of locl science education, and research of local topics, there is still some room for improvement by the museum.
