Education in Taiwan is currently facing important reforms. Teachers are expected to focus on theme-based course design instead of single subject teaching, and to emphasize cross-disciplinary learning and teaching. In response to changes in education policy, teachers have begun to attempt to break the mold and design interdisciplinary courses. Museums are a good site to provide learning experiences through edutainment. Making good use of museum resources gives school teachers to have rich and diverse choices in designing curricula, and guide children in self-study. This article is a case study of the collaborative project between the National Palace Museum and Hsinchu Xiangshan Elementary School, and discusses the planning, design, and implementation behind new syllabi and literacy-oriented curricula, conducts a literature review on collaborative teaching and museum-school collaboration, explains how teachers from Xiangshan Elementary School and museum staff implement collaborative teaching, plan cross-disciplinary themed courses, and finally analyzes the methods and benefits of museum-school joint competency-oriented curriculum development and implementation. The aim is to serve as a reference for both teachers and museum professionals in future museum-school collaboration projects.
