We haven't placed enough stress on the agreement between the selection of documentary evidences and the pronunciation and meaning of a character so far while compiling and revising a large dictionary about ancient Chinese. The fact affects the scientificity and practicability of a dictionary, where the matching between pronunciation and meaning of a word is now and then misplaced. Thus we must pay special attention to the research on the relationship between pronunciation and meaning of a character, which is meaningful for recognizing the nature of Chinese characters and the Chinese as well as compiling and revising a large dictionary about ancient Chinese at present. In this passage, we take the polyphonic and polysemous character jie(解) as an example and discuss the problem while compiling and revising a large dictionary about ancient Chinese that how to harmonize the form, pronunciation, meaning and documentary evidence of a character, and at the same time reflect the different relationships between the pronunciation and meaning of a character in different historical periods. We hope the reaseach will contribute to compiling and revising a large dictionary about ancient Chinese.
