The idea of hospice service started in 1983, but the first facility was not set up until 1990. There are currently 37 qualified in-patient units and 57 qualified homecare services register under the Taiwan Academy of Hospice Palliative Medicine. The current demand for hospice service is great and could not be met by service capacity. Increasing hospice coverage up to 50% has become the primary goal. Education and training is still the top priority of hospice development followed by research involving indigenous models. It has also been reconfirmed that the current curriculum of palliative medicine will be the education needed in the future. Accreditation of in-patient and home care units was initiated from 2000 and the first group of Palliative Medicine Specialists was qualified in 2001. With a promising plan to extend hospice services over to the non-malignant terminal patients, the status of the hospice movement in Taiwan has been more positive than ever.
