The Comparison of the Benefits, Impact, Support, and Sustainability between Participants and Residents for Road Race Events in Taiwan

This study compares the benefits, impact, support, and sustainability between participants and residents for road race events in Taiwan. The subjects were road race event participants and local residents. A questionnaire was self-developed called "road race events benefit, impact, support and sustainable cognitive scale." A total of 1825 valid questionnaires were collected. The results revealed the following: 1) road race event participant cognition of social benefits, environmental benefits, economic benefits, event support, and sustainability were significantly higher than local residents; however, no significant differences were found in cognition of social impact, environmental impact, and economic impact; and 2) road race event participants and local residents cognition of the positive benefits were significantly higher than their cognition of the negative impacts. In conclusion, this study found that road race event participant cognition regarding the social benefits, environmental benefits, economic benefits, event support, and sustainability were significantly higher than for local residents. Also, road race event participant cognition regarding the positive benefits was significantly higher than the negative impacts. This was mainly caused by road race participants obtaining a positive social identity and local residents have to bear the impact of the results of the environmental, economic, and social dimensions, and resulting cognitive gap for event benefits, event support, and sustainability of participants and local residents. However, participants and local residents all believe that the positive benefits were higher than the negative impact of the road race events in Taiwan.
