The International Olympic Committee pays more attention to athletes' career planning because athletes devote most of their time on mastering their sports specialty, neglecting their future career plans. Consequently, athletes typically fail to adapt to career transition once their sports career ends. The objective of this study was to investigate the sports career process and planning of elite table tennis players in Taiwan and then explore the career planning and development of these players after their sports career ends. This study targeted table tennis players who had competed in the Olympics. On the basis of past relevant studies collected from dissertations, journals, and books, we compiled a semi-structured interview guideline. A collation and analysis of the collected data revealed the following findings: (a) Because elite table tennis players must be fully committed to sports training and contests, they tend to neglect their career planning problems relating to school works, interpersonal relationships, and family issues. Therefore, during the course of their study, athletes require assistance from coaches and teachers to engage in effective self-exploration and career planning. (b) Elite table tennis players typically experience problems in career transition at the end of their sports career. Because they spend most of their time on training, they neglected to cultivate a second expertise, consequently limiting their employability after their sports career ends. Thus, schools and coaches must develop an effective counseling measure for motivating athletes to leverage school resources to adequately prepare themselves for their future.
