Reform of General Education: The Application of Problem-Based Learning on "Globalization and World Transformation"

Recognition of the importance of General Education is growing in institutions of higher learning in Taiwan. This recognition has merged with a trend toward reform. This paper begins with rationales and subject areas developed at Harvard University, the National Taiwan University and the Kaohsiung Medical University. This paper will also focus on the importance of providing students with competence to look at Taiwan itself, and from Taiwan outward and thereby finding a standing place in this era of globalization. This paper discusses whether the strategies of Problem Based learning (PBL) can help reach the goals set for general education. Further this paper examines the interdisciplinary course ”Globalization and World Transformation” (GWT) to analyze whether PBL can be integrated into it and if PBL can help strengthen students' interdisciplinary learning. Data from a course questionnaire reveals that most students think that PBL does help with self-learning and critical thinking ability helps enhance the motivation to study global issues and raise global awareness. In addition, GWT also provide an opportunity to reflect on the competence of teachers to conduct PBL, and ways PBL can be integrated into teaching strategies of interdisciplinary course.
