The purpose of this study was to examine the use of first grade children's use of singing voice and differences between boys' and girls' use of singing voice. Singing Voice Development Measure (SVDM) developed by Rutkowski was the instrument in this study. With stratified and cluster sampling, 230 first graders who enrolled elementary schools in Taipei County were examined individually. It can be concluded: All participants' singing voices can be classified into the Category 1.5 to 5 and no Category 1 (Pre-Singer) is found. The majority of participants' singing voice categories are Limited Range Singer (28.70%) and Speaking Range Singer (22.61%). 94% participants did not appropriately use their singing voices. The variable of gender did not affect the disparity of singing voice development.
