Study of Cultural Inertia in Traditional Society in Relation to Taiwan's Education System

By analyzing educational ideas and goals and by observing the practice of education in Taiwan, this study verified that Taiwan's education system is still dominated by the cultural inertia of tradition, and no avenues for change are evident. Through an analysis of various educational archives and empirical research findings regarding the field of education, this study investigated the characteristics of the centralization of Taiwan's education system and the characteristics of the dictation of examinations. This paper indicates that these characteristics are based on a patriarchal mentality, the culture of imperial examination, and the custom of separating concepts and realities. The author argues that if the basic aspects of traditional cultural inertia cannot be changed, it will not be possible to integrate real innovations into the design and implementation of a new education system in Taiwan.
