BIM APPLICATION SURVEY COMPARISON BETWEEN TAIWAN AND OTHER COUNTRIES

For the past few years, the Building Information Model (BIM) technique has been developed quickly and has received huge attention globally. To make a right decision for promoting BIM technique, it is necessary to have some fundamental survey data of BIM implementation based on the industry whatever determining industry requirements, industry policy planning or implementation performance evaluation. First, this study compared several surveys in Taiwan to identify the status of the art in BIM application survey. After that, this study conducted diversity comparisons to identify the contemporary features of BIM implementation according to the surveys in Taiwan and other countries. Finally, this study concluded research findings and proposed some suggestions and recommendations for further BIM promotion and research according to the identified contemporary features consisting of (1) BIM application in Taiwan being in start-up phase, (2) concentrating on building-related projects, (3) focusing on design and construction stages, (4) current BIM education and training being dissatisfactory, (5) BIM benefits (e.g., return on investment) being low compared to other countries and requiring appreciate evaluation approach, (6) major benefits (e.g., reducing errors and omissions on construction documents) being different to other countries, (7) major values of implementing BIM being reducing conflicts in construction, (8) major investment on BIM being education and training in near future. Hopefully, research outcomes could be a good reference for determining BIM implementation policies and developing BIM researches in the future.
