Despite a common belief that our everyday aesthetic tastes, preferences, and judgments are trivial and inconsequential, they often exert a surprising degree of influence over our attitudes and actions. This power of the aesthetic can have serious ramifications, such as political and environmental, either through intentional utilization or as unintended consequences of the cumulative and collective effects of our aesthetically-guided decisions. One mission of everyday aesthetics is to cultivate aesthetic literacy in order to raise our awareness of this power of the aesthetic and to help us become vigilant about its consequences. Everyday aesthetics should also explore ways of harnessing this power of the aesthetic to serve our collective project of better world-making.
