Crafting the 'Compendium of Materia Medica Concert': A Mixed Communication Theory Reflection on the Assembly Process of 'Lingzhi' into Traditional Music Concert

The advertisement "The Good and Bad of Lingzhi Lies in Polysaccharides" has made Lingzhi a household name in Taiwan as a health food. However, it is quite rare for Lingzhi to be transformed into an eclectic art performance combined with a science popularization event and a national music concert. This article draws on Wittgenstein's pragmatics, anthropologist Bateson's ecology of mind, sociologist Goffman's frame analysis, and anthropologist Latour's social-technical network, along with Small's concept of "musicking," to explore how various actors collaborate to construct Lingzhi as an alternative national music performance. From a relational perspective that emphasizes context and meaning generation, this study investigates how the conductor and the scientist communicate with entrepreneurs and audiences through music, leading to the organization of several "Compendium of Materia Medica" Concerts. Adopting the spirit of grounded theory and using local vocabulary, this article points out that the actors involved employed strategies such as association, allegory, guided listening, semantic linkage, self-justification, and contextual adaptation for communication. These strategies engaged different actors in the translation process of Lingzhi, creating resonance among scientific education, musical performance, and commercial activities.
