Purposes: The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of playing woodball of the improvement of the fitness and health of community elderly. Method: This intervention study used repeated measurements to perform the experiment. This study used purposive sampling to select a total of 84 eligible senior subjects from a community in Taichung City. The subjects were divided into the experimental group (n=40) and control group (n=35) at their own will. 34 male subjects and 41 female subjects were enrolled. The mean age of the experimental group was 68 (SD=4.1), and that of the control group was 70 (SD=3.2). The experimental group received the intervention of woodball training program. They played woodball 3 times per week and 90 minutes every time. The control group did not receive any intervention of sports. After 12 weeks, all the subjects received the tests on fitness and self-perceived physical and psychological health. The data of various assessment indices were collected 12 weeks before/after the intervention for analysis. SPSS for window 14.0 was used to perform statistical analysis. The statistical significant level was α=.05. Results: In terms of fitness: After the sport intervention, there were significant differences in upper/lower body muscle strength, cardiovascular endurance index, lower body flexibility, agility and movement balance of the experimental group, while there was no significant difference in those of the control group. The self-perceived physical and psychological health of the experimental group was significantly better than those of the control group. Conclusions: The results showed that playing woodball continuously and regularly can improve fitness of the elderly. The research results can be provided as reference to future promotion of woodball for the elderly and relevant studies.
