Dialogical Hermeneutics: The Methodological Exploration of Chinese Biblical Studies from the Perspective of Comparative Scriptural Studies

並列摘要

Using the perspective of comparative scriptural studies, this article explores "dialogical hermeneutics" which is based on the hermeneutical method of cross-religious reading, providing an open and dynamic interpretative mode for Chinese biblical studies. The above consideration starts with an observation on the origins of Jewish hermeneutical tradition and Chinese classical scholarship especially on the scriptural reasoning of rabbinic biblical interpretation and early Confucian interpretive methods. From these two traditions, the author focuses specifically on midrashic hermeneutics and Mencius' classical reading strategy, "Making Friends with the Ancients" (knowing about the ancients and discussing the ages in which they lived) as her case study to show their respective dialogical hermeneutical natures. Through this inquiry into the interpretive characteristics and reading intentions of the works cited, this article points out that the use of "dialogical hermeneutics" will provide a rich hermeneutical resource for the future development of Chinese biblical studies within a multi-religious classical context, as well as promote the construction of an indigenous biblical interpretive approach.
