After 1976, children's literature in Mainland China is regarded as having entered the so -called New Period for its liberalness, creativity and profound content. This development has three characteristics. First, children's literature in this period breaks away from the orthodox idea that literature is 'an indoctrinating instrument'. Instead, writers of children's literature are more away of their own consciousness and concern of mankind. Second, the adult-centered point of view has mostly disappeared. The principle that children's literature should be in accordance with children's viewpoints and thinking has been reestablished in order to encourage children's awareness of humankind and to remake national character. Third, the tension between the narrow criterion of classification of children's literature and the variety of writing has been reduced. The classification of children's literature based on different psychological stages has been accepted.
