Yan Shu and the Culture of the Northern Song Dynasty

The cultural ascendancy of the Northern Song dynasty has something to do with Yan Shu. However, Since most of the 240 juan 卷 selections of Yan Shu have been lost, this makes it extremely difficult to make a study of Yan. For this reason, even today the study of Yan Shu is still confined to the appreciation of the collection of his poem entitled Zhuyu ci 珠玉詞. Placing Yan Shu in the context of the development of the culture in the Northern Song dynasty, this article investigates his relations with the culture of the Northern Song dynasty and pinpoints his contributions to that culture by his vitalization of education, recommendation of qualified personnel, putting in order of ancient books, artistic attainments, proposals in poetry writing, and his poems, ci 詞 poems, descriptive prose and literary composition.
