With the growth of medical technology and the spread of the concept of health care, the global average life expectancy has been continuously prolonged. Many developed countries have seen a rise of elderly population in recent years. Despite the fact that this is now a global trend, it has also brought many serious problems. In the early years, the public paid more attention to the long-term care services and the welfare policies for the elderly. In recent years, however, concerns have gradually been raised about such issues as how to promote the physical and mental health of elderly people and how to reinvigorate a sense of self-meaning and value into their later years. A large number of literature and research data have shown evidence that participation in social activities is helpful to the psychological health of elderly people. In the process of their participation, elderly people are able to develop their interpersonal relationships and participate in social activities while they are still in a healthy state. This can help elderly people maintain themselves in a healthy condition and in pursuit of higher self-realization, thereby achieving an improvement in the quality of life in their later lives. In view of this, this study focuses on the social participation of elderly population, investigates relevant research and literature at home and abroad, explore the contribution of social participation to and its relationship with the current elderly population, and provide related entities and organizations with relevant references for their policy-making and research in the future.
