The "Fo Guang Chan for Everyday Life (Buddha's Light Meditation Practice for Everyday Life)" originated from Venerable Master Hsing Yun's philosophy of "Humanistic Buddhism", which is the original intent of the Buddha. It formed the basis for daily practice of the later Chinese Southern School of Chan, in which "the Buddha-Dharma can be realised in this world". It also inherited the "Human Life Buddhism" philosophy proposed by Master Taixu in the early Republican era. In the last five decades, it was propagated and practiced actively by Master Hsing Yun and other prominent Buddhist masters, as well as by passionate Buddhist youths. It has gained popularity in Taiwan, and its influence is being spread gradually to other countries. The "Fo Guang Chan for Everyday Life" was established by Venerable Master Hsing Yun to meet the needs of modern day people. Being suitably adopted by urban citizens in their daily lives, it is a treatment for modern social problems, as it fulfils human physiological and psychological needs. It is also a concrete practice for one of the Fo Guang Shan objectives, which is "To Purify Human Minds through Spiritual Cultivation".
