D. T. Suzuki and the Modern Interpretation of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism

This essay is an examination of the interpretations of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism by D. T. Suzuki (Suzuki Daisetsu Teitarō 鈴木大拙貞太郎, 1870-1966), one of the most influential Buddhist thinkers in Japan and the West during the twentieth century. In the modern period Pure Land Buddhism in Japan underwent a crisis when confronted with Western science, secularism, and materialism. In response to this, D. T. Suzuki and other progressive Japanese Buddhists attempted to articulate new and different interpretations. Among the various schools of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism, Suzuki focused on Shin Buddhism (Jōdo Shinshū 淨土真宗) particularly, founded by the great medieval figure Shinran 親鸞 (1173-1262). Suzuki took themes and concepts from Shin Buddhism and explicated them in ways that would be compatible to modern thinking. Instead of focusing on the traditional other-worldly view of the Pure Land, Suzuki emphasized religious experience of the Pure Land in the present life and realization of the non-dualistic relationship between humans and the Buddha. This essay explores ways that Suzuki applied these interpretations to traditional Pure Land beliefs and practices.
