Acceptance of Renewable Energy by College Students in Taiwan

Technology acceptance model (TAM) is frequently used for studying people’s acceptance of a new technology taking into account their perceived usefulness and perceived ease-of-use of the technology. In this study, renewable energy is considered a new technology and TAM is employed to investigate the acceptance of renewable energy at current stage in Taiwan by college students. Individual’s knowledge of renewable energy, recognized cost of renewable energy, and reliability of nuclear energy are selected as three external variables that affect perceived usefulness and ease-of-use of renewable energy. The factor analysis and structural equation model (SEM) are also used to analyze relationships among variables. After conducting a survey, retrieving a total of 308 valid questionnaires, and carrying out all the analyses, the following conclusions are obtained. (1) College students’ knowledge of renewable energy positively influences their recognized cost, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease-of-use of renewable energy. (2) Their recognized cost of renewable energy has nonsignificant influence on their perceived usefulness and perceived ease-of-use of renewable energy, which is owing to their knowledge of renewable energy. (3) Reliability of nuclear energy negatively influences the perceived usefulness of renewable energy by college students in Taiwan.
