The purpose of this paper is to examine the wage effect of professional certifications. According to the human capital theory and the signaling theory, individuals with professional certifications can have higher wages. Therefore, in this study, we use the 2007 labor life and employment survey for the regression analysis to examine the effect of professional certifications on individuals’ wages in Taiwan. Our empirical results confirm that individuals can have higher wages by getting professional certifications. Different kinds of professional certification will lead to discrepancy on individuals’ wages: financial certifications and professionals and technologists certifications have positive wage effects, while technical certifications, computer certifications, language certifications and other certifications have insignificant effects. The results also indicate that the wage effects of professional certification s vary with individuals’ education levels. Individuals with lower education level can have more wage increases by getting professional certifications.
