The majority of bamboo products available on the market are of traditional styles. As a result, there is a distance between these products and the consumers of the younger generation. In order for bamboo products to be widely accepted, creative designs are necessary. These designs should be close to our everyday life and conform to the styles of living nowadays. Only through these designs can the bamboo industry be revived. Therefore, the aim of this project is to find out how to make use of the characteristics of bamboo, how to conserve the traditional culture, and how to apply these into the designs in our life. Through discussion of existing literature and design practice, several aspects were scrutinized: the problem in selecting the Bamboo culms, required cost and manpower needed for bamboo platings and experience in producing bamboo laminates. Traditional Taiwanese craftsman have amazing skills and ability in creating the delicate bamboo products. Nonetheless, in a different era and with different demands in society, bamboo art has become a kind of artefact and launched its own niche. If designers of the new generation are willing to put effort in designing bamboo products, new features of bamboo products may be developed. However, attention is still needed in understanding the characteristics of the raw material, the techniques in processing, and the cultural heritage deep in the bamboo, for if we have these as the basis of our designs and inventions, we will then be able to design products that leave great impressions on people’s minds. And it is this that can be called “the creative culture of Taiwan”.
