In the past users are accustomed to the lighting environment where the illuminance of the visual target and its surroundings is identical. This attempt to maintain illuminance continuity in the space, however, results in unnecessary waste of energy. Meanwhile, mixed lighting can provide high illuminance for the visual target and evenly distributed illuminance for its environment and help reduce general lighting energy requirement. In association with the use of local lighting arrangement, we can effectively mitigate lighting energy consumption. This study therefore seeks to identify a lighting environment that meets the requirement from the perspective of visual comfort and energy conservation. This study looks into the relations between the mixed lighting environment and psychological response through simulation experiment that involves 30 test participants. Under the basic operational lighting standard, two variables – light output proportion and color temperature – are placed under control for subjective satisfaction evaluation. The psychological measurement is put through single-factor ANOVA. In accordance with the six illuminance distribution methods and four lighting source color temperature changes, discrepancies in the degree of mental satisfaction are examined. The correlations are examined via various analytical tools in conjunction with assessment of the overall energy conservation performance. The conclusions of this study can serve as reference for mixed lighting design. The conclusions are listed below: 1.The mental satisfaction of two illuminance arrangements – a general illuminance of 500 lx in association with a local illuminance of 0 lx; a general illuminance of 400 lx in association with a local illuminance of 100 lx – is higher than that of other environments. 2.The general illuminance comfortableness and the mixed lighting environment satisfaction are highly positively correlated. 3.The mixed lighting environment can satisfy both the requirement of visual comfort and energy conservation. It is recommended that the lighting arrangement that involves a general illuminance of 400 lx and a local illuminance of 100 lx be used.
