This study utilizes literature review, field study of original dormitories, and interviews to establish the factors that should be applied when planning and designing new dormitories for migrant workers. A 2-phase residential satisfaction survey and interview results are used in inductive analysis in order to establish a framework for the factors that should be considered when proposing designs of dormitories for migrant workers. This study came to the following results: 1. This study constructed a framework of consideration factors for designing a dormitory based on the 5 major facets of comfort, convenience, security, privacy, and cross-cultural implementation to include 14 factors of consideration with 115 detailed items. Factors of consideration include: size of space, lighting design, interior color combinations, ventilation, sound proofing, layout and movement, functionality for chores, provided facilities, safety of decor quality, safety of furniture and facilities, establishing fields, privacy protections, homeland culture requirements, and religious requirements. 2. When performing comparative analysis on the satisfaction towards size of space in both original and new dormitories, the study found that migrant workers showed significant increases in satisfaction towards spaces within the dormitory based on the factors of consideration set forth in this framework. Out of all aspects, the most significant improvement was towards the space of bathrooms and laundry rooms. 3. When comparing the aspects of satisfaction between the old and new dormitories, many design items showed a significant increase in satisfaction. Few improvements showed insignificant increases in satisfaction so this study proposes the following suggestions: (1) Vietnamese migrant workers have a high demand for cookware, kitchen space, and cooking facilities so management should assess the number of migrant workers when coordinating with the commissary, providing group meals, and planning kitchen spaces. (2) Configuring bedrooms with independent refrigerators as opposed to having refrigerators in public areas can avoid conflicts regarding ingredient management. (3) In order to control noise, small social lounges on every floor should exhibit more benefit compared to one large social lounge. (4) Lighting in bedrooms should prioritize the general brightness of a space followed by lighting. 4. Variables such as “duration in Taiwan” and “religious faith” have a significant influence on the satisfaction of dormitory design depending on migrant workers' backgrounds. 5. Correlation analysis on dormitory design considerations and living experiences found that increasing residential satisfaction in dormitories was beneficial for increasing a sense of belonging and willingness to stay in migrant workers.
