Gang has always been a threat to public order. Although the police has made some effort to wipe out the gang, threats still exist and hard to exterminate. Current policy is incapable of solving the gang problem, due to a lack of understanding of the gang problem. Think about it in another way, if we want to do a research on how to break down the gang, we must learn from the ex-gang member to find out the best solution for different authorities to collaborate with each other. The present study refers to the literature from Taiwan and some other foreign literatures, using the life course, differential association and rational choice theory’s point of view to find out the key factor that persuade the member to leave the gang. This research is based on interviewing three ex-gang members with semi-structured questionnaire, which includes personal detail, childhood experience, gang experience and the lifestyle after leaving the gang. The main outcome of the study is that all three ex-gang member had similar growing background and family structure, with low social status and complicated neighbourhood relationship. The main factor which affected them to leave the gang is the strong self-awareness. Other factors like the changed of daily routine activities and the interference of informal social-control are also effective in helping the member to leave the gang.
