Global warming becomes more serious due to the effect of green house gases (GHGs). The reduction of GHG emissions has drawn much attention among the nations around the world, and thus Climate Change Convention and the Kyoto Protocol were signed and ratified to tackle global warming problems. The GHG emissions of Taiwan ranks 16th in the world; however, Taiwan cannot participate international GHG reduction mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol due to the global political issues. The understanding of national GHG emissions is essential for the Taiwan government, and the understanding of GHG emissions is also the first step of implementing GHG reduction for an industrial manufacturer. TFT-LCD is a growing industry in Taiwan recently, and cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) is the major backlight source for TFT-LCD. This study is to build the GHG inventory system in CCFL industry according to ISO/CNS 14064 standard, and one CCFL manufacturer is selected as case study to illustrate the understanding of GHG emissions in the company basis. The inventory result showed that GHG emission is 6,520.972 tons-CO2e for the study case in 2007. Following the definition in ISO/CNS 14064 standard, GHG emission of the study case is further divided into 117.210 tons-CO2e (1.797%) for direct GHG sources in scope 1, 6403.762 tons-CO2e (98.203%) for energy indirect GHG sources in scope 2, and not quantified other indirect GHG sources in scope 3. Based on the sorting of 6 regulated GHGs in the Kyoto Protocol, GHG emissions are 6,516.800 tons-CO2e (99.936%) for CO2, 42.970 tons-CO2e (0.063%) for CH4, 0.065 tons-CO2e (0.0001%) for N2O, and trace amounts for HFCs, PFCs, and SF6. This study also applied PAS 2050 standard to evaluate carbon footprint for CCFL products. Due to the limitation of available data, the boundary of carbon footprint is set as business to business (B2B). Varied size and number of CCFL products were used to assemble diverse end manufactured goods including monitors and LCD TV products, and thus GHG emissions for each CCFL product were calculated accordingly. GHG emissions for CCFL products are 1,516.8 gCO2e/set for 20” monitor, 4,071.6 gCO2e/set for 26” LCD TV, 8,820.0 gCO2e/set for 32” LCD TV, and 15,112.8 gCO2e/set for 42” LCD TV. Adapted carbon footprint data of life cycle analysis from one TFT-LCD manufacturer, GHG emission for 42” LCD TV product is 213 kgCO2e per set. In this study, the calculated GHG emission for CCFL product used in 42” LCD TV is 15.1 kgCO2e/set that only accounts for 7.1% of GHG emissions in life-cycle carbon footprint of 42” LCD TV product.
