英語教學領域研究論文引言:台灣作者和國際作者的比較

Research Article Introductions in TESOL: A Comparison between Taiwanese Writers and International Writers on Constructing the Textual Organization

摘要


本研究旨在探討研究論文的引言部份,由台灣本土作家和國際作家在TESOL(英語教師講其他語言)領域之中,文字的組織差異是否存在於兩個語料庫之間。在本研究中使用的兩個語料庫,包括四十篇2006-2010年發表的研究的論文引言,在應用語言學領域的兩個領先期刊 - 英語教學與學習(ETL)和TESOL季刊(TQ)。繼Swales(1990)創建研究空間的分析框架中,研究者依據內容和語言標準,明確指出在每節的步驟之間其文本界限。軟體Microsoft Office Excel中的數據進行了分析計算的百分比,以及使用軟體SPSS19進行t檢驗。 調查結果顯示,大多數的國際作家和台灣作家沒有傾向於嚴謹地依照Swales(1990)創建研究空間的模式。然而,此步驟一-步驟二-步驟三的結構,出現在所有TQ語料庫中。因此,國際作家比台灣作家更傾向於跟隨Swales(1990)創建研究空間的模式。除了兩個語料庫之間有一些相似之處,在文字組織上,顯示有三個主要的差異性。首先,缺少步驟的情況出現在ETL語料庫,而不見於TQ語料庫中,尤其是缺乏步驟2出現在ETL語料中。第二,在TQ語料庫中,步驟一的第一步是屬於“可選擇性的”,但是,它是屬於“強制性的”在ETL語料庫。國際作家可以選擇要或不要強調研究領域的重要地位。第三,在TQ語料庫中,步驟二的1A步和步驟三的1B步比起在ETL語料庫中,被採用得多。因此,台灣作家會選擇不去對前人提出反對的辯論點,並且,也比較少直接宣布目前的研究。 研究結果有助於應用語言學領域的研究生,特別是非英語為母語的學習者,當他們在英語論文引言的寫作上遭遇困難時。再者,本研究也提供應用語言學領域的教師們一個有價值的教學資源。最後,對於未來研究的建議,採用ㄧ個較大的語料庫,讓研究發現得以廣泛應用。

The study aimed to examine research article introductions written by local Taiwanese writers and those by international writers in TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) field to see whether any textual organization differences exist between the two corpora. The two corpora used in the present study consisted of forty research article introductions (2006-2010) from two leading journals in the field of applied linguistics--English Teaching & Learning (ETL) and TESOL Quarterly (TQ). Following Swales’ (1990) analytical framework of move analysis, CARS model, the researcher identified the textual boundaries between moves in each section by their content and linguistic criteria. The data was analyzed by the software Microsoft Office Excel to calculate the number of percentage and the software SPSS 19 to run the t test. The findings showed that the majority of the international writers and Taiwanese writers did not tend to strictly follow the CARS model. However, the move structure Move 1-Move 2-Move 3 appeared in all the patterns of move structural patterns in TQ corpus. Therefore, international writers tended to follow the CARS model in the move structural patterns than Taiwanese writers did. Except for some similarities between two corpora, there were three major differences of textual organization between international writers and Taiwanese writers of TQ and ETL journals. First, the situation of lacking one of the moves appeared in ETL corpus, but not in TQ corpus, especially lacking Move 2 appeared in ETL corpus. Second, Move 1 Step1 in TQ corpus was belonging to the “optional”; however, it was belonging to the “obligatory” in ETL corpus. International writers could choose to or not to claim the centrality of the research field. Third, Move 2 Step 1A and Move 3 Step 1B had much higher opportunities to be adopted in TQ corpus than that in ETL corpus. Hence, Taiwanese writers would choose not to make a counter-claim against the former researchers and took less chances to directly announce the present research. The findings of the present study can be categorically beneficial to graduate students in the areas of Applied Linguistics, especially for non-native English writers, while they encounter difficulties in writing research article introductions. Furthermore, this study provides a valuable resource for teachers in the field of Applied Linguistics. Finally, the suggestion for further research is that a larger corpus in needed to determine how far the findings can be generalized.
