In recent years, awareness of health versus electronic devices has risen. Much public attention has been focused on the e-paper device. The device has the advantages of less eye injuries, low power consumption, flexibility and many more. However, current application developers do not devote much attention to develop applications focused on the characteristics of e-paper devices. Futhermore, the display characteristics of the e-paper screen contains low response rate, and each page switching produces screen refresh effect. The current popular applications if applied on the e-paper device would result in extreme blurring, and too many screen refresh effects. In this thesis, we will evaluate the issues resulting from the use of the common application software in the e-paper device. The display effect of instant messaging system on the e-paper device will also be improved by reducing page switching. Finally, to develop an instant messaging system E-Paper Message (EPM) dedicated for the e-paper device. Experimental results showed that EPM in e-paper device can completely remove extreme blurring, and can effectively reduce screen refresh effects. Comparisons were also made with a number of well-known instant messaging systems such as LINE, WeChat, and WhatsApp. The results showed that EPM, when compared to the other instant messaging systems, is more suitable for use in the e-paper device.
