In this ever changing contemporary world, the essence of industrial goods has shifted from mass production to both emphasis on aesthetics and the experience from the end user. In addition, the increase of exchange in information has decreased the life-cycle of industrial products. Under such circumstances, the importance of design has become significantly relevant as the concept of differentiation is not only a desired but a required feature for a successful product. As standard of living improved, spiritual needs along with material wants are both strengthened for modern residents of the world. To fulfill such need, many choose to visit the museum or expose themselves to art as a method to enhance oneself. As a result, the importance of art in the modern society has become justified when compared to the past. The concept of optical illusion is a new form presentation in art. Optical illusion emphasizes the interaction between the work and the viewer; it utilizes images, colors, angles, and perspectives to create a mirage in the visual fields of the viewer. This concept brings art from a statutory creation to a more dynamic existence as the viewer could “walk in” to the work and interact with it. The research would focus on “Closing the distance between art work and people” as the central idea. This focus would also like to integrate the method of optical illusion into design. Through the concept of optical illusion, the research will discuss and formulate designing standards to construct a framework used for designing process. Lastly, through the analysis of techniques used in optical illusion, and conclusion of its application on product design, the research hopes to provide a foundation for further researches in the similar area.
