According to the Ministry of Interior, more than 60,000 Vietnamese brides living in Taiwan in 2004, and they represent the largest group of legal foreign spouse (China excluded). As a relatively recent immigrant group to Taiwan, the degree to which Vietnamese brides are utilizing health care services and their medical behavior is not well documented. The objective of this exploratory study is to investigate medical behavior and health care service utilization of Vietnamese brides in their newly adopted country. A survey was administered anonymously to 220 Vietnamese brides living in Taichung-Dali city areas. This study found that Vietnamese brides are gradually changing their medical behavior as a result of influence from Taiwanese family members. Pregnancy examination is the major reason for these Vietnamese brides to access health care services. This study also found that length of residency in Taiwan is a significant factor in determining the utilization of health care services.
