Gender Differences within the Stages of Exercise Change among College Students

The purpose of this study was to analyze gender differences within the stages of exercise change to produce information regarding college students' exercise behaviors. Examination of variables used in this study served to create group profiles specifically identifying characteristics unique to each gender These exercise-related behaviors could be used as intervention strategies to design effective techniques that increase physical activity. Variables that were used to separate gender differences within each stage included physical activity, determinants, barriers, and values. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) determined that the gender differences within the stages included parental support, perceived competence, attitudes towards physical activity, and enjoyment of physical activity. A discriminant analysis was run as a post-hoc comparison to identify variables that separate genders at each stage. Results from the discriminant analysis verified that every stage contained variables that differentiate specific characteristics between genders. Intervention techniques could isolate and identify variables that are useful to specific populations thereby increasing active lifestyles.
