In the highly competitive sports competition today, how to improve sports performance in a more efficient and faster way is the concern of most team and coaches. According to many researches, coach is the key factor to improve sports performance. This article is to describe the coaching leadership from the point of view of leadership theory and coaching practice. The results revealed that coaching is a multidimensional job. The coaches have to play different roles including setting goals and lead the team to achieve better performances. However, sports situation is always changing. There is no one best way to lead a sports team. Rather, the leader should combine the situational factors and the personal traits of athletes with leadership theories in to a multidimensional leadership model that can be applied into leadership practices.
