The purpose of this study was to explore the participation motivation of general basketball teams and clubs in colleges. First of all, discussing the literature with scholars, we had a preliminary understanding and pre-test questions of the factors involved. Then, by purposive sampling method, 300 students were tested with the pre-test scale, and 232 valid questionnaires were collected (effective questionnaire rate =77.5%). After item analysis and factor analysis, a formal questionnaire with 25 questions was established. Through factor analysis, the questionnaire was divided into four factors: self-growth, social relations, stress relief, and utilitarianism. The research results showed that the general basketball club and school team participation motivation scale has good reliability and validity, which can be used as a reference for sports units. Self-growth (intrinsic motivation) was the highest ranked motivation for participation, followed by stress relief, utilitarianism, and social relationships are the lowest.
